Kokeshi doll vintage creative by master Sekiguchi Sansaku (1925-2018). Her title is 矢羽根 (Yanane) which means “Arrow Feathers” and that’s what her beautiful kimono pattern features. In addition to the kimono, her hair is decorated with a cute pink ribbon.
In Japan, some Shinto shrines hold ceremonies named Yabusame in which people shoot arrows from a galloping horse. In addition, arrows are given at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples as a Japanese New Year’s lucky charm.
Sekiguchi Sansaku (1925-2018) is perhaps the most renowned kokeshi master. He’s the only artisan who has ever been certified by the Japanese government as “master of creative kokeshi”. He has a museum in his birth city of Shibukawa in Gunma prefecture and it’s being managed and maintained by his daughter Izumi who is a kokeshi artists in her own right. He has won the prestigious prime minister award three times for his beautiful and unique kokeshi designs.
