Bio & Awards

Born in 1956 Horiuchi Chiyomi has been a kokeshi artist for a long time. Originally she and Tokumaru Etsuko were classmates and later she started studying under her guidance. Her dolls are very feminine and elegant and usually colorful. She finds inspiration for her dolls in Japanese folktales and culture as well as fabrics and ceramics. Her mother who’s 94 years old have also made kokeshi dolls. One of her latest works is inspired by the old Japanese folktale Urashima Taro.
