This kokeshi was made and signed by Yushi Kawase who was born Gunma prefecture in 1938. She’s titled 福良雀 (Fukura Suzume) which means “Plump Sparrow”. It refers to a sparrow puffing up its feathers in winter to stay warm. In Japanese culture this round and fluffy look is seen as cute and also considered to be auspicious. You can find it in kimono fabrics as well as ceramics. It’s also a type of a kimono obi (belt) knot called Fukura Suzume Musubi.

In great condition. Comes with the original box.
