This kokeshi doll was made by Katase Kaihei (1922-2013) and her title is “Oboroyo” (おぼろ夜) which means “Misty, Moonlit Night”. The front of the body is decorated with a white pattern which can only be seen with the eye when turned against light in a certain angle.
Katase Kaihei was born in Hakone, Kanagawa prefecture in 1922 and that’s also where he studio used to be. He has won the prestigious prime minister award in 1954 and his dolls are often characterized by having curvy and flowing hair. Besides the prime minister’s award he has also won numerous other awards and decorations for his works and outstanding skills.
In very good condition with minor marks of age and use.
