Ishimura Vintage Kokeshi Doll – Ono no Komachi (22cm/8.6 inches)

This beautiful and colorful vintage creative kokeshi was made & signed by master Ishimura.

She is titled 秋田　小野小町 (Akita, Ono no Komachi). Ono no Komachi was a Japanese poet of the early Heian period. She was renowned for her unusual beauty and poetic talent. Her poems are included in many classical Japanese anthologies, and she is one of the Six Poetic Geniuses (Rokkasen). Thanks to her, Komachi is a synonym for feminine beauty in Japan. The first part of this doll’s title is Akita, which is a prefecture located in northern Japan where it is believed she was born. In her honor, the Akita Shinkansen (bullet train) is named Komachi and a popular variety of rice, Akita Komachi, also bears her name.

In great condition, comes with the original box and wooden sign.
