This vintage creative kokeshi doll was made and signed by the multiple award winning female master Aoki Ryoka (1931-). Her title is 寒風 (Kanpu) which means “Chilly Wind”. She’s wearing a traditional coat, pants and traditional straw boots (called waragutsu in Japanese). It’s a lovely winter scene and you can almost feel the cold wind blowing by the hair of the doll and her pose with both arms together.
Aoki Ryoka was born in 1931 in Shikishima village, Gunma prefecture. She has won multiple awards for her beautiful kokeshi dolls including the prestigious prime minister award. She also received the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor for her diligence, perseverance and achieving excellence in her craft.
