Sekiguchi Sansaku Vintage Kokeshi Doll – White Lotus (31.5cm/12.4 inches)

Kokeshi doll vintage creative by master Sekiguchi Sansaku (1925-2018). Her title is 白蓮 (Byakuren) which means “White Lotus”. She’s wearing a natural wood color kimono with red accents and lotus flowers that are yet to open. Sansaku san submitted this doll to the All Japan Kokeshi Contest 16 years ago back in 2010.

In Buddhism lotus flowers symbolizes purity, as well as enlightenment and they can often be seen in gardens of temples.

Sekiguchi Sansaku (1925-2018) is perhaps the most renowned kokeshi master. He’s the only artisan who has ever been certified by the Japanese government as “master of creative kokeshi”. He has a museum in his birth city of Shibukawa in Gunma prefecture and it’s being managed and maintained by his daughter Izumi who is a kokeshi artist in her own right. He has won the prestigious prime minister award three times for his beautiful and unique dolls.
