This vintage Japanese creative kokeshi doll was made by master Kunio Miyakawa (1933-). Her title is もみじ (Momiji) which usually refers to maple tree leaves, especially those that turn bright red in autumn. In Japanese culture, the sight of momiji leaves changing color is a symbol of the fall season and is often associated with beauty and the fleeting nature of life. As her title suggested, her kimono is decorated with maple leaves that turn gradually from red to orange and yellow on a river background.
Born in 1933 in Gunma prefecture. He has won the prestigious prime minister award twice for his beautiful kokeshi creations.
