Vintage Kokeshi Doll by Yamanaka Sanpei – Old Tale (19cm/7.4 inches)

This chubby vintage kokeshi was made and signed by master Yamanaka Sanpei (1926-2012). Her title is 昔ばなし (Mukashi banashi) which means “Old Tale”. This doll was made in the image of a little girls covered in a warm blanket during winter while listening to old tales from her parents. Yamanaka Sanpei won the prestigious Prime Minister award winning for this design.

Yamanaka Sanpei has won over 20 awards for his kokeshi dolls including the prestigious “Prime Minister Award” in 1979. Sanpei’s inspiration for kokeshi doll designs often come from children.

He made several sizes of this doll and this is the biggest he made.
In great condition, comes with the original box.
