Vitnage Kokeshi Doll by Yamanaka Sanpei (16cm/6.3 inches)

This bulky vintage kokeshi doll was made and signed by master Yamanaka Sanpei (1926-) who won over 20 awards for his kokeshi dolls including the prestigious “Prime Minister Award” in 1979. Sanpei’s inspiration for kokeshi doll designs often come from children.

This doll shows a child wrapped in a warm red & black blanket during winter. Master Sanpei lives in Yonezawa city in Yamagata prefecture where the winters are very cold and snowy and it’s often a motif in his works.
