This chubby kokeshi was made by Sadao Kishi (1932-1998).
Her title is 花だより (Hanadayori) which is a term that means “flower report” or “flower news.” It usually refers to updates or information about the blooming status of flowers, particularly cherry blossoms (sakura), across various regions in Japan. These reports are popular during the cherry blossom season and help people plan their hanami (flower viewing) outings.
Born in Gunma prefecture in 1932. His creative kokeshi dolls received various awards including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI). He is credited with being one of the major influences of the ‘Creative Kokeshi Movement’, gaining recognition for the dolls as a popular and valid art form.
