Vintage Kokeshi Doll by Katase Kaihei – The Sea in Spring (27cm/10.6 inches)

This unique kokeshi doll was made by Katase Kaihei (1922-2013).

Her title is “The Sea in Spring” and her body beautifully depicts a scenery with blue waves flowing over greens growing on the bottom, as well as sea spray carried by the waves on a warm spring day.

Katase Kaihei was born in Hakone, Kanagawa prefecture in 1922 and that’s also where he studio used to be. He has won the prestigious prime minister award in 1954 and his dolls are often characterized by having curvy and flowing hair. Besides the prime minister’s award he has also won numerous other awards and decorations for his works and outstanding skills.

In very good condition with minor marks of age and use.
