This lovely creative kokeshi doll made and signed by Shirahama Kumiko (1952-). She’s titled 思い (Omoi) which can mean “Thoughts” and also “Wish”. She’s wearing a dark pink kimono with floral decorations as well as temari which are traditional Japanese handcrafted balls, are intricately embroidered with colorful geometric patterns. Her hair is carved with two cute pigtails held by red ribbons. She has a beautifully carved pink obi on her back.
*Please note that when Shirahama san was making this doll there was a scratch made above the doll’s left eye which Shirahama san tried to cover.
Shirahama Kumiko was born in Hokkaido and lives in Saitama prefecture today. She doesn’t make many dolls but those that she make are very feminine, cheerful and elegant.
