This bulky vintage creative kokeshi doll was made by master Sekiguchi Toa (1942-). She’s titled 晩秋 (Banshu) which means “Late Autumn”. She’s wearing a dark blue kimono with Japanese pampas grass decorations and the moon shining brightly in the background. Together they form a typical view of Tsukimi which is a traditional Japanese moon viewing event taking place in the autumn.
Master Sekiguchi Toa was born in Shibukawa City, Gunma-ken, and still lives and works nearby in Maebashi city. He won many awards including the Ministry of International Trade Industry Award in 1978. Since then he has won the Prime Minister’s Award, along with other respected awards.
