This vintage kokeshi doll was made and signed by Kato tatsuo (1940~). Her title is 山桜 (Yamazakura) which means “Mountain Sakura”. It refers to wild mountain cherry trees that can be seen in Japanese mountains, especially famous in the Yoshino area not far from Nara. Her golden colored zelkova kimono is decorated with sakura (cherry) flowers that combine different motifs like auspicious hemp pattern (asanoha) and traditional wave pattern (seigaiha). Her hair is beautifully carved.

Kato Tatsuo was born in 1940 in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture which is home to many famous kokeshi artists. He learned kokeshi doll art under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku and he has won multiple prizes and awards for his beautiful works and contribution to Japanese culture.

In very good condition with signs of age and use. Comes with the original box and wooden sign.
