This exclusive kokeshi doll was made by the talented and long time kokeshi artist Yahagi Ichiko (1952-). Her title is 愛花 (Shoka) which means “The Beginning of Summer”. This period when summer is just starting, often around late May or early June, has several beautiful flowers blossoming in Japan such as irises that can be found on her kimono sleeves. The amount of detail on this doll is perhaps one of the most elaborate I’ve seen by Yahagi san to this day.
Ichiko Yahagi was born in Ishikawa prefecture, Kaga city in 1952. She has won many prizes for her unique and beautiful kokeshi dolls and also taught the art of kokeshi making to active artists.
