This exclusive vintage creative kokeshi was made and signed by Sadao Kishi (1932-1998). Her title is 萌芽 (Houga) which can be interpreted in 2 ways, one would mean “Sprouting” – when a plants bud sprouts and emerges from the ground. Another meaning is “The appearance of signs that things are about to happen” (hopefully good ones). She shows wonderful wood grain and has a natural wood color kimono in two tones with a red carved obi to give her a more feminine look.
Born in Gunma prefecture in 1932. His creative kokeshi dolls received various awards incluing the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI). He is credited with being one of the major influences of the ‘Creative Kokeshi Movement’, gaining recognition for the dolls as a popular and valid art form.
