Vintage creative kokeshi doll made and signed by Ichiko Yahagi (1952-). Her title is まり (Mari), which is both a girl’s name and a play of word with Temari which means “Hand Ball” and is a traditional Japanese folk art. Crafted meticulously by hand, these intricate balls are often made from silk, repurposing kimono scraps to create beautiful and culturally significant pieces. Mari can also mean rounded. Her red kimono is decorated with whiteish pink sakura flowers and the obi on her back is stunningly carved with auspicious asanoha pattern.
Ichiko Yahagi was born in Ishikawa prefecture, Kaga city in 1952. She has won many prizes for her unique and beautiful kokeshi dolls and also taught the art of kokeshi making to active artists.
