This one of a kind kokeshi doll was made and signed by Aoki Ryoka (1931~). It’s titled “樹影” (juei) which means “Shadow of Trees” and features a late autumn kimono in orange, brown and black and decorated with beautiful drawn trees that have shed their leaves. The bottom of the doll has the doll’s title and a caption that says it was created in late 1985.
Aoki Ryoka was born in 1931 in Shikishima village, Gunma prefecture. She has won multiple awards for her beautiful kokeshi dolls including the prestigious prime minister award. She also received the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor for her diligence, perseverance and achieving excellence in her craft. She is still active today at the age of 91(!).
In good condition with visible marks of age and use.
