This wonderful vintage creative kokeshi by award winner master Hideo Ishihara (1929-1999). Her title is 草枕 (Kusamakura) which means “sleeping on grass in an open field” (literally grass pillow). It relates to travelers in old times who spent the night on the side of the road under the moonlight. It’s easy to imagine this scenery looking at Ishihara san’s creation with her beautiful wood grain, hat, and elegant floral decoration on the bottom.
Master Hideo Ishihara (1929-1999) started as a traditional Naruko kokeshi artist. Feeling limited under the traditional design he switched to creative kokeshi and became one of the most influential and prominent artists of his time. He has won over 60 awards including the prestigious prime minister award.
In very good condition with signs of age and use.
