This lovely vintage kokeshi doll was made and signed by Kato tatsuo (1940~). Her title is 春陽 (Shunyo) which means “Spring Sunshine” which refers to the gentle sunlight and warmth of spring after the winter is over. Kato san decorated her with beautifully carved plum flowers in natural wood color and red which are considered to be auspicious in Japan since they blossom first after the winter, hence they symbolize perseverance and hope.

Kato Tatsuo was born in 1940 in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture which is home to many famous kokeshi artists. He learned kokeshi doll art under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku and he has won multiple prizes and awards for his beautiful works and contribution to Japanese culture.

In good condition with signs of age and use. Comes with the original wooden sign (not shown in the pictures).
