This wonderful doll by Kato Tatsuo (1940~) is titled あうん (A-Un) which are the first and last letters of Sanskrit. This expression symbolizes the beginning and end, duality and unity, two opposites forming one whole. Guardian lion-dogs in temples (komainu) as well as Nio guardian statues in temples in Japan often display the same – one with an open mouth for A, and the other with a closed mouth for Un.

Kato Tatsuo was born in 1940 in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture which is home to many famous kokeshi artists. He learned kokeshi doll art under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku and he has won multiple prizes and awards for his beautiful works and contribution to Japanese culture.

In great condition with signs of age and usage. Comes in the original box with the original wooden sign.
