This creative kokeshi doll was made and signed by Yuko Yamazaki (1956-). Her title is パンダちゃん which both reads and translated to “Panda Chan”.
Chan (ちゃん) in Japanese, is a cute, affectionate honorific suffix used after a person’s name. It’s often used for children, friends, pets etc.
Her kimono features an intricate サラサ (sarasa) pattern, which is a a type of traditional printed textile design that often features floral patterns. The word originates from “chintz”, a type of fabric that was imported to Japan from India during the Edo period.
She’s hugging a cute panda bear, partially wrapped in her sleeves.
Yuko Yamazaki was born in 1956 and learned the art of kokeshi dolls from master Yoshida Takashi. She has won many prizes for her unique and beautiful kokeshi dolls and also taught the art of kokeshi making to active artists.
