This lovely kokeshi was made and signed by the multiple award winning female master Aoki Ryoka (1931-). Her title is Isoshigi (いそしぎ)which means Sandpiper (a type of a bird). She’s made of beautiful Keyaki (zelkova) wood with beautiful grain. Her kimono is decorated with an auspicious wave pattern as well as waterwheels.
Aoki Ryoka was born in 1931 in Shikishima village, Gunma prefecture. She has won multiple awards for her beautiful kokeshi dolls including the prestigious prime minister award. She also received the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor for her diligence, perseverance and achieving excellence in her craft. She is still active today at the age of 91(!).
In very good condition with signs of age and use. Comes with the original wooden sign.
