This chubby kokeshi was made by Sadao Kishi (1932-1998).
Her title is いざない which can be translated to “Inviting” or “Invitation”. To me she resembles a lady who works at a small local restaurant inviting customers in to eat since she’s wearing a 割烹着 (Kappogi) which is a sort of an apron worn over the kimono to protect it from stains while cooking.
Born in Gunma prefecture in 1932. His creative kokeshi dolls received various awards including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI). He is credited with being one of the major influences of the ‘Creative Kokeshi Movement’, gaining recognition for the dolls as a popular and valid art form.
