This pair kokeshi dolls by Yamanaka Sanpei is titled “Omokage” (面影) which means “Resemblance” or “an image or face that comes to mind”. The female doll features a check pattern in red and black with a natural wood color obi (kimono belt) while the male doll has horizontal stripes in red and blue along darker colored wood and a longer obi.
Master Yamanaka Sanpei was born in Yonezawa city in Yamagata prefecture in 1926. He won over 20 awards for his kokeshi dolls including the prestigious “Prime Minister Award” in 1979. Sanpei’s inspiration for kokeshi doll designs often come from children.
