This one of a kind kokeshi doll was made and signed by Aoki Ryoka (1931~). It’s titled “香梅” (koubai) which means “Scent of Plum” and features an early spring kimono in brown with plum flowers on a beautifully carved black background. The collar is also decorated in the same manner and her carved long hair reaching the middle point of her kimono.

Aoki Ryoka was born in 1931 in Shikishima village, Gunma prefecture. She has won multiple awards for her beautiful kokeshi dolls including the prestigious prime minister award. She also received the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor for her diligence, perseverance and achieving excellence in her craft. She is still active today at the age of 91(!).

In good condition with visible marks of age and use.
