This beautiful kokeshi doll was made by Takano Yohachi (1907-1994). Takano Yohachi was born in Nou town in Niigata prefecture and he has loved painting since he was a child. When he moved to Tokyo to learn Japanese painting it is said that he was so passionate about it that he often forgot to eat and sleep. During these years he also mastered the art of Yuzen dyeing which is traditionally used for kimono. After the war he settled in Yuzawa town where he started showing interest in traditional kokeshi dolls and woodworking.
Yohachi dolls are characterized by delicate brush strokes, splendid colors, and patterns. They often feature beautiful women in kimono, birds, flowers, mountains and other nature scenes.
