This adorable kokeshi doll was made by the talented, long time kokeshi artist Shirahama Kumiko (1952~).

Her title is 五月晴れ (go gatsu hare) which can be translate to “Fine Weather in May”.

She’s beautifully depicting the month of May in Japan when the koi nobori (carp streamers) are flown from poles around the country. Koinobori are carp-shaped streamers flown in the sky for Children’s Day on May 5th in Japan.
The carp symbolizes strength and determination, wishing for children to grow up healthy and strong.

You can see Mt.Fuji in the background as well as the famous Shibazakura flower festival which colors the area northwest from Mt.Fuji in shades of pink, purple and white.
