This unique kokeshi art was made and signed by the award winning master Shido Shozan (1932-1995). The title of this work is 冬ごもり (Fuyugomori) which can be translated to “Winter Retreat” or “Winter Hibernation”. It’s made of a combination of dark Enju wood and lighter mizuki wood, and it depicts 3 kids wrapped in warm blankets hiding away at home from the cold winter.
Master Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. He’s known for his delicate and subtle designs which emphasize the wood tone and grain. His dolls often have a simple facial features and his dolls are very popular and sought after among collectors. He has won many awards as well as the most prestigious prime minister award. Even though he was born in Kyushu, he moved and worked in Yonezawa city in Yamagata prefecture, a region in northern Japan which gets very cold in winter and sees a lot of snowfall, hence one of the main motifs of master Shozan’s works is winter.
