Vintage Creative Kokeshi Doll by Sato Suigai – Tatazumi (33cm/13.1 inches)

This elegant vintage creative kokeshi doll was made by master Sato Suigai. Her title is Tatazumi (たっずみ) which can be translated to “Standing Still” or “Lingering”.

Showing the beauty and warmth of keyaki (zelkova wood) her kimono features beautiful red plum blossom which is considered to be auspicious in Japan.

Made and signed by the multiple award winning, master Sato Suigai. He was born in 1920 in Gunma Prefecture which is home to many other famous creative kokeshi masters. He only began creative kokeshi at age 29 (1949). Suigai is actually not his real name, it’s a pseudonym taken from his teacher Mr. Suiun Komuro who taught him Japanese painting.
