This vintage creative kokeshi doll was made and signed by the multiple award winning, master Sato Suigai. Her title is ę³ććććć« (Omoi Shizukani) which means “Quiet Feelings”. It points to a calm, self-reflecting emotions that are kept inside and not necessarily shared with others and are left unspoken. She was made on a lathe with the body having horizontal cuts from bottom to top, and Suigai san beautifully painted over them a subtle floral decoration.
He was born in 1920 in Gunma Prefecture which is home to many other famous creative kokeshi masters. He only began creative kokeshi at age 29 (1949). Suigai is actually not his real name, it’s a pseudonym taken from his teacher Mr. Suiun Komuro who taught him Japanese painting.
In great condition with minor signs of age and use.
