Sato Suigai Vintage Kokeshi Doll – Haregi (28cm/11 inches)

This vintage creative kokeshi doll was made & signed by Sato Suigai. She is titled 晴れ着 (Haregi) which means “Special Occasion Clothing”. She dressed up for a special event with a beautiful red kimono with elaborate peony decorations and a contrasting black obi (kimono belt) with an asanoha pattern in gold.

Made and signed by the multiple award winning, master Sato Suigai. He was born in 1920 in Gunma Prefecture which is home to many other famous creative kokeshi masters. He only began creative kokeshi at age 29 (1949). Suigai is actually not his real name, it’s a pseudonym taken from his teacher Mr. Suiun Komuro who taught him Japanese painting.
