This vintage kokeshi doll was made and signed by the award winning master Sadao Kishi (1932-1998). Her title is 浄 (Jo) which means “Purity” and “Cleansing” and it often has a spiritual nuance that implies of being in a very calm and clear state of mind. The kimono has light black stripes contrasting the wood color beautifully. It is decorated with momiji (maple) flowers and she’s wearing a sleeveless black haori on top of it. The hair is beautifully carved and gathered into a bun at the top of it.
Born in Gunma prefecture in 1932. His creative kokeshi dolls received various awards including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI). He is credited with being one of the major influences of the ‘Creative Kokeshi Movement’, gaining recognition for the dolls as a popular and valid art form.
In very good condition with multiple visible marks, as well as signs of age and use. Has 2 wood knots on the back. Please inspect all images.
