This tall vintage creative kokeshi doll was made by master Miyashita Hajime (1940-). Her title is 春よこい (Haru yo koi) which means “Come Spring”. It’s not a command but more of a hopeful/wishful expression often used in children’s songs and poetry when someone is longing for spring. Her kimono is decorated with red camellia flowers – a common winter motif hence the longing for the warm spring to come.
Miyashita Hajime is a multiple award winner master who was born in 1940. The current Japanese emperor and empress are fans of him and used to collect his dolls. In 2006 he retired after his kokeshi shop burnt down in a fire.
