This one of a kind kokeshi doll was made by Kato Tatsuo in 1988. Her title is 琴の音 (koto no oto) which means “The Sound of The Koto”. Koto is Japan’s national musical instrument, it’s a 13 strings instrument and traditionally the strings were made of silk. This doll is a true work of art and her body is decorated with birds, sakura (cherry) flowers and traditional Seigaiha (waves) pattern which symbolize power and resistance.

Kato Tatsuo was born in 1940 in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture which is home to many famous kokeshi artists. He learned kokeshi doll art under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku and he has won multiple prizes and awards for his beautiful works and contribution to Japanese culture.

In great condition with signs of age and use.
