This vintage kokeshi doll was made and signed Kato Tatsuo (1940~) back in 1985. Her title is 山椿 which means “Mountain Camellia” and refers to camellia that grows in the wild. She’s made of zelkova wood that has darkened over the years and her kimono is decorated with beautiful camellia flowers with snowflakes on their leaves. Her hair is beautifully carved all the way down.
Kato Tatsuo was born in 1940 in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture which is home to many famous kokeshi artists. He learned kokeshi doll art under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku and he has won multiple prizes and awards for his beautiful works and contribution to Japanese culture.
