This unique kokeshi doll was made by Katase Kaihei (1922-2013).

The hairstyle is an interpretation of oversized up-flipped hair styling which was typical to the Dutch, who were the only Europeans allowed into Japan back in Edo Period. At the time, the Dutch maintained a trading post at Hirado, an artificial island off the coast of Nagasaki. They had a major influence on how the Japanese interpreted life and style of dress, including hair.

Katase Kaihei was born in Hakone, Kanagawa prefecture in 1922 and that’s also where he studio used to be. He has won the prestigious prime minister award in 1954 and his dolls are often characterized by having curvy and flowing hair. Besides the prime minister’s award he has also won numerous other awards and decorations for his works and outstanding skills.
