This wonderful kokeshi doll was made by the talented, award winning master Chiyomatsu Kano who was born in 1935 in Gunma prefecture.
She’s titled 花一輪 (Hana ichirin) which means “One Blossom.” It basically means one flower that blossoms on its own. As the title suggests she has a single, beautifully carved camellia flower in full blossom. Her hair it also carved in various lengths and angles giving her a splendid look. As often with dolls by master Chiyomatsu, she’s made of warm toned keyaki (zelkova) wood.
Kano Chiyomatsu began making kokeshi dolls in 1953, one of the most decorated and prized masters in Japan. He already passed away though the exact year is unknown. He has won the prestigious prime minister award twice and many other awards for his beautiful kokeshi dolls.
