This adorable kokeshi doll was made by the talented, award winning artist Yahagi Iichiko (1952~).
Her title is 美桜 (Mio) which is a name used for girls in Japan. The writing literally means “Beautiful Sakura Blossom”.
As her name suggests, she’s not just beautiful but her kimono also features pink and red sakura flowers, as well as other colorful flowers. The kimono is also decorated with a dotted kanoko pattern.
What I love most about this doll is the way her hair is elegantly gathered and flows beautifully to her left side (see the 2nd picture).
Ichiko Yahagi was born in Ishikawa prefecture, Kaga city in 1952. She has won many prizes for her unique and beautiful kokeshi dolls and also taught the art of kokeshi making to active artists.
