This lovely kokeshi doll was made by the very talented and multiple award winner Chiyomi Horiuchi (1956~). She’s titled おでかけ (Odekake) which means “Going Out” (e.g. to leave the house and go somewhere, usually for fun). She’s wearing a brown kimono with colorful flower decorations and a golden cape on top of it. Her hair is beautifully carved with multiple ornaments to match the fancy look.
The inspiration for this doll came from the Japanese folktale “Kaguyahime” which tells the story of a mysterious girl found inside a glowing bamboo stalk and raised by a kind bamboo cutter and his wife. She grows into a beautiful woman, receives many marriage proposals but remains distant and secretive until one day, the reason behind her unusual presence is finally revealed.
