Shirahama Kumiko

Bio & Awards
Born in Hokkaido in 1952. Her dolls give a very warm and mother-like feeling with beautifully decorated kimonos in a wide range of colors and often accompanied by a pair of kind smiling eyes. Many of her dolls are inspired by the landscape and scenery of Hokkaido, Japan’s northmost island which is famous for it’s beautiful and diverse nature as well as colorful fields which attract many visitors, both local and foreign alike.

- 2010 – National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition Tokyo Shinbun (newspaper) Award
- 2012 – National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition Japan Kokeshi Association Award
- 2014 – All Japan Kokeshi Contest Maebashi Mayor Award
- 2015 – National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition Jury’s Special Award
- 2016 – National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition Annual Grand Prize
- 2017 – National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition Jury’s Special Award
- 2024 – All Japan Kokeshi Contest Mayor of Odawara-Hakone Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award
