Vintage Japanese Kokeshi doll set by Master Miyajima Muhitsu (1929-) based on the Three Wise Monkeys.
Left: Mizaru, who sees no evil, covering his eyes.
Middle: Iwazaru, who speaks no evil, covering his mouth.
Right: Kikazaru, who hears no evil, covering his ears.
They are also depicted in the famous Toshogu shrine in Nikko, Tochigi prefecture alongside other marvelous wood carvings.
Master Miyajma Muhitsu was born in 1929 in Yamagata prefecture. Surrounded by local traditional kokeshi artists he first trained and made traditional kokeshi though in 1950 started making he made the shift to creative kokeshi. A multiple award winner, Miyajima-san won the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1973.
In good condition with signs of age and use. This set includes the original wooden sign.
