This exclusive kokeshi doll was made by the award winning master Shido Shozan (1932-1995). She’s titled 初雪 (Hatsu Yuki) which means “First Snow”.
She’s holding her coat up covering her face from the cold winter weather. The winter motif can be often seen in master Shozan’s work since he lived in Yamagata prefecture in northern Japan when the winters are very harsh with lots of snowfall.
Master Shido Shozan was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. He’s known for his delicate and subtle designs which emphasize the wood tone and grain. His dolls often have a simple facial features and his dolls are very popular and sought after among collectors. He has won many awards as well as the most prestigious prime minister award.
In great condition with minor marks of age and use. Previous owner put black stickers on the bottom probably to prevent to from falling/moving in case of earthquake.
