This hina kokeshi doll set was made by the talented, award winning artist Yahagi Iichiko (1952~).
Their title is 福寿 (Fukuju) which means “Happiness and Longevity”. This term is often used in well-wishes, decorations, or calligraphy to express a wish for a long and prosperous life.
In hina dolls, the left doll tradtionally represents the emperor while the right doll represents the empress. They are put out to displayed during Hina Matsuri which is the Girl’s Festival in Japan at the end of February until the 3rd of March, carrying the wish for the healthy growth of girls. This set also includs the base and 2 wooden carved lanterns on the back.
Ichiko Yahagi was born in Ishikawa prefecture, Kaga city in 1952. She has won many prizes for her unique and beautiful kokeshi dolls and also taught the art of kokeshi making to active artists.
In mint condition. Comes with a black wooden base, 2 wooden lanterns and the original box.
