This exclusive vintage kokeshi doll was made & signed by the award winning master Kano Chiyomatsu (1935-). Her title is 里の秋 (Sato no Aki) which means “Countryside Autumn” and which is also the title of a popular Japanese song, originally written as a children’s song but widely appreciated by all ages. The lyrics reflect nostalgia for the countryside during autumn and often evoke images of quiet rural landscapes, peaceful autumn scenes, and a longing for home. The song has a warm and gentle melody that captures the tranquil and reflective feeling of autumn in Japan, making it a beloved piece in Japanese culture. Chiyomatsu san made this beautiful piece with such autumn colors and motifs, using stunning keyaki (zelkova) wood in combination with reddish momiji leaves.
Kano Chiyomatsu began making kokeshi dolls in 1953, one of the most decorated and prized masters in Japan. He already passed away though the exact year is unknown. He has won the prestigious prime minister award twice and many other awards for his beautiful kokeshi dolls.
